Wiki's
Prior to this course, I was not familiar with Wiki's. On my first attempt at using a Wiki I was more than a little bit overwhelmed. I did actually delete everything and spent a frantic evening trying to figure out what I did and how to fix it. I am amazed at the technology that is available to us today. Wiki's are definitly valuable to the media specialist, the teacher, and students. They provide a forum for people all over the world to communicate and share ideas. I was very impressed by the examples of high schools using Wiki's. As with all new things, it is very daunting to take on new ideas and incorporate them into our already over loaded days. I would hesitate beginning to encourage others to use Wiki's until I had become semi-comfortable with using them myself. I still have many questions about Wiki's and their use in the school system. How would one go about managing the amount of information that was being posted? How would one monitor the content? It seems that it would be an enourmous undertaking, especially for a beginning media specialist.

Good call Jodi. One of our classmates actually deleted my overhead bulb instructions on the class wiki (it wasn't you). Fortunately, the wiki keeps a history page and Kim was able to go back and fix the wiki to reflect my work. That's one of the great things about the wiki, besides the fact you can limit who posts, it also keeps a record of who does the work and when. This makes it possible to fix and track any changes made.
So Todd has answered one of my questions which is, "Can you tell who deleted a piece of information." I have that Murphy's Law syndrome sometimes and I've learned to try to keep it secret. It does seem like it would take a lot of time for not so much information in some cases. I guess it is a nice way to socialize for those who do not care to get out to meet people. I does seem really cool and promising for businesses, individuals and even families.
Wow! Everything you said, I thought about, but didn't say. I am a first year media specialist, and am at times totally overwhelmed with the day to day requirements. I can't imagine taking anything else on right now. Maybe next year when I have a year under my belt and am finished with these courses I might would take on wikis. I was also very unsure about using wikis in our initial assignment, but I muddled through it. You raise many good questions, unfortunately, I don't know enough to be able to answer them. Great post.
You are much more at ease with wiki's than I. I had also never used one before this class and had a very difficult time posting the first time. I do agree that wiki's could be used as a teacher forum for topics within school systems and within grade levels. It could also easily be used for lesson planning as well. I would have to become much more at ease using wiki's before I would want to share with my faculty. If I'm not prepared and very knowledgable about wiki's it could open up a entire can of worms that I'm not prepared to deal with.
Jodi, I feel like you, overhelmed. How do we possibly become experts at all of these things. I hope I wasn't the one that Todd was referring to. You know it could be me! I sounds like something I would unintentionally do. I like the idea of the Wiki and how anyone around the world can communicate with you!
